The biggest adjustment Cameron and I faced when moving in together was coming up with a solution for my clothes. We have a master bedroom closet, but it definitely wasn’t big enough for both of us. I’ll be the first one to admit that I have A LOT of stuff and we knew we would have to get creative.

The space where we built the closet was originally just a small sitting area at the top of our stairs. No one ever used the room (except for our dog) and it felt like a waste of space. We decided to use Closets by Design to completely customize the space. My father-in-law Ken was so great in helping me visualize the space. I was blown away by how quickly they were able to design and install the closet. They transformed a boring room into one of my favorite spots in the house.

Decor

My mom helped me a ton with the decor of the closet. She painted my old bedroom furniture to complement the rest of the room. She used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in color “Old Ochre” with a clear wax on top.  You can find it here

One of my favorite focal points of the room is my antique rug from Apple & Oak. Allison, the owner, curates the BEST selection of vintage rugs around. I always love visiting her shop and getting decor inspiration from her. If you’re not local, be sure to check out her online shop! You won’t be disappointed.

The lighting in the room isn’t the best, so we installed an illuminated vanity mirror. These are definitely pricey, but I’ve used them since high school and they’re my absolute favorite. They come with a built-in dimmer as well as outlets for hair tools, phone chargers, etc. It’s something I use every single day and has definitely been worth the investment.

Organization

Having the right storage is essential to getting and staying organized. I started by sorting through my clothes and transferring them all to these velvet hangers. (I finished this after the photos were taken, but you get the point.) The anti-slip texture ensures that your clothes will be kept in place without slipping or falling off. These thin velvety hangers are also made to maximize the closet space, allowing you to keep you clothes neatly organized. I got this genius denim storage hack from my friend Kelly’s recent blog post. It’s as functional as it is cute! I love how it displays the denim rather than hiding them away in a drawer.

Next, I tackled accessories. I’m a BIG accessory girl and everything was such a mess before moving into our house. My biggest goal was to declutter and get rid of some things. After that, I went to Target and the Container Store and bought all the necessities. Some of my favorite and most functional finds include this earring organizer, sunglasses holder and this gorgeous necklace stand. These items are a must-have for every girl’s closet.

Finally, I attempted to organize my makeup and beauty products. These are always the most difficult areas for me to keep organized. My favorite find was this shoe drawer that I use to store my makeup products. If you’re anything like me, your makeup only stays neatly stacked and organized for about a day or two. I love how I can throw all my products in this acrylic box and it still looks somewhat organized!

I use this gold pencil holder to store all of my brushes and absolutely love it! These drawer organizers are super helpful in keeping my vanity drawers more put together. I also love this tray for displaying perfume and miscellaneous items that I use daily.

This closet transformation has helped me feel so much more organized and start this next chapter of life on the right foot. It’s so much easier to pull looks together when I can actually see everything I have! If you are wanting to redo a close space in your home, I highly recommend Closets by Design. Ask for Amie and tell her I sent you!

I hope these decorating and organization tips will help some of you better organize your own closets. I love doing home decor posts so let me know what you want to see next! Xo
