The best advice I got from my friend Jackie was to make sure I tell my newborn, “no.” You’re probably thinking I’m crazy, but hear me out!
A goal Cameron and I have always had with our kids is to speak to them like they are real people. Of course, we do “baby-talk” now and then (how could you not when they’re so cute!), but Cameron and I are very cautious of being fair to each of our children.
When you bring a new baby home, the toddler is constantly told “no.” (Don’t touch the baby, don’t do this, no we can’t do that right now.)
So we started saying no to our newborn…. “No Radnor, mommy can’t play right now. I’m having special time with Remy.” Phrases like this made such a difference!
It’s so important to us that our kids feel they are equal. You’ll hear Cameron and I say to Radnor daily, “No no, Radnor. Don’t pull Remy’s hair!” This shows Remy that they both have consequences and do not feel negatively about the word, no.
Curious how you handled going from one child to two! Let me know in the comments if you have any tips.
