We recently shot our fall family photos with my friend Michelle (@madlovemama) and I am so happy with how they turned out! I know picking outfits for family photos can be daunting, so I wanted to share a few tips I’ve learned from both taking our own family photos and Cameron’s photography work over the years.
Choose a location. This can help you determine the overall look you’re going for with your outfits. We knew we wanted to shoot these fall photos in Leiper’s Fork with the changing leaves, and that helped me in choosing the warmer tones. Do you want trees and greenery? A cozy look on your couch? An urban city vibe?
Choose YOUR outfit first. You want to feel confident in your photos, so find something you love and feel comfortable in! I tend to gravitate towards dresses with movement because I love when movement is captured in family photos.
Mix textures! To me, nothing adds depth to photos like texture. Whether it’s a chunky knit sweater like Remy wore here or a velvet accessory, a variety of textures adds interest and character to any image.
Play with layers. Layers are also a great way to add interest. Vests, sweaters, and lightweight jackets can all accomplish this.
Don’t get too matchy (unless it’s intentional!) – I love a good Mommy & Me look (see below) but generally don’t recommend matching outfits unless it’s intentional. For example, you could have your two kids match but don’t have the whole family in green as it doesn’t give the photo much variety.
HAVE FUN! Seriously. If there’s anything I’ve learned from taking so many photos, it’s that your emotions truly show. When you look back at these, you won’t care that your hair wasn’t perfect or you wore the wrong shoes. You’ll remember the sweet moments with your family. Twirl around. Play with your baby. Kiss your husband. Forget the photographer is even there. I personally love the playful, in-the-moment images and those are the ones I know I’ll cherish most.
