When my mom suggested a drive-by baby shower, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect. I’ve always pictured a baby shower surrounded by my closest loved ones, playing games and sharing laughs and hugs. However, it ended up being such a sweet day of joy and celebration. We felt so loved!

In order to keep everyone safe, we set up a gift table at the end of the driveway. Mimi also passed cookies to the guests with a grabber so there was no contact. Some people stayed around for a few minutes to chat and others just drove by. It was the perfect way to allow everyone to stay as long as they felt comfortable. I also wanted to make it clear that we did not expect any gifts and this was just a time to get together and celebrate our little one on the way!

I honestly don’t feel like we “missed out” on a normal shower. This time of being apart made seeing our loved ones (if even from a distance) that much sweeter! If you are pregnant during this crazy time of COVID-19, I highly recommend celebrating with a Zoom or drive-by shower. Huge thank you to my mom Melissa and the amazing vendors for making this day so special!

How to Host a Drive-By Baby Shower

SEND OUT A GRAPHIC, PHYSICAL INVITATION OR EVITE. Cameron made a graphic for the shower and my mom sent it out with all of the details. This is an easy and inexpensive way to share all of the important information. You could also put together an Evite to have a better idea of who is coming and be able to send reminders. Our invitation included our registry information, date and time, and address in case they wanted to ship a gift ahead of time. There are some really cute designs for drive-by showers on Etsy!

SET THE MOOD. The balloon arch and letters made it feel so festive! The decorations also made a great backdrop for socially-distanced selfies from the car. Dressing up in a dress and doing my hair and makeup was also fun for me!

MAKE IT SPECIAL FOR THE MOM (AND DAD!) TO BE. Guests can crank up their favorite tunes as they drive by or make a sign. The kids really had fun with this part. One of my favorite aspects of this shower was how involved and celebrated Cameron was too! We definitely would have missed out on that with a traditional shower.

MIND SOCIAL DISTANCING. Most importantly, make sure to follow social distancing guidelines at all times during a drive-by shower for everyone’s safety.

TAKE LOTS OF PHOTO AND VIDEO! Remember, one day we will tell our kids about the months leading up to their birth. It’s important to capture these moments even though they may look a little different than we expected.

HAND OUT PARTY FAVORS (optional.) I loved giving something to our guests who came all the way over to celebrate us. This could be a customized koozie for people to remember these crazy times, a cookie or sweet treat or whatever feels right for you. This also helps keep kiddos occupied in the cars!

Let your drive-by shower serve as a true celebration of you and baby! Though the current coronavirus outbreak is stressful and overwhelming, the future with your little one is so bright.

Where did you get the big balloon from that you’re holding?

  3. I agree that having some decorations can help set a festive mood, even if you can’t have an actual party. I like the idea of doing that when our son is born so all our family and friends could celebrate with us. I’ll have to get some signs and things to help decorate if my wife likes the idea as well.
